More and More Greeks in Australia Give Up Greek Language

Statistics in Australia have shown that more than 400 languages are currently being spoken in the continent as a means of communication among family members.

However, only 250.000 out of 600.000 Greek speaking Australians speak Greek at home.

“Things are dramatically changing. From 1996 to 2006 the number of Greek speaking Australians employing Greek to communicate at home was reduced by 7%. This number is expected to steadily rise in the future” said Professor Michalis Tsianikas, director of the Neo-Hellenic Studies Department of the Flinders University in Adelaide.

“Relevant studies so far have revealed that the Greek language used to rank third on the list of the most widely spoken languages in Australian, after English and Italian. Now Greek ranks fourth, as Chinese is expanding and taking the third place” added Mr. Tsianikas.
