Greek Language in the National School Curriculum

Modern Greek has been included as one of the languages in the National Curriculum, proposed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

Labor Members for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou and Stathis Georganas stated that the inclusion of the Greek Language in the National Curriculum is a great success for Hellenism abroad and is proof of the  government’s focus on multiculturalism, showing respect to Greek Diaspora.

The Greek community, the Archdiocese, Greek schools, and Neos Kosmos have all played a big role in campaigning for Modern Greek to be added to languages taught under the national curriculum.

“I think that with Modern Greek being one of the top five languages in Australia and also now being in the national currciculum we could do more in the relations between Australia and Greece in trade, foreign affairs and a whole range of other things,” Mr Georganas said.

“Greek is not only a significant community language in Australia – it is the language of great minds such as Plato, Aristotle, Homer and Hippocrates. Australians have personal, professional, historical, social and cultural ties to Greece” Mr Georganas added.

On her part, Ms Vamvakinou said, “The inclusion of the modern Greek language in the national curriculum is extremely important. It will strengthen the curriculum, making it more dynamic and relevant and more reflective of Australia’s existing multilingual capacity.”
