Australian Minister Moved by Hellenic Emergency Relief Fund’s Initiative

The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd was moved by the Greek Community’s gesture of gifting a $100,000 check to support the flood victims of Queensland, who have been going through harsh times since earlier this year.

The money was raised through different events and cultural initiatives organized by the Hellenic Emergency Relief Fund, which is formed by the SAE Oceania and working under its auspices.

Mr. Rudd thanked both the Fund and the Greek-Australian Community of Victoria for their support of the victims.

President of the Fund Michalis Christodoulou said that the Fund chose to donate the raised money to Kevin Rudd because the Greek and Cypriot Communities of Brisbane are located within his electoral district. “MP Rudd on his part will pass the check to the special fund created by Queensland government to aid the victims of natural disasters” added the Greek-Australian.

The Community delegation that approached Mr. Rudd also consisted of SAE Oceania Coordinator Giorgos Aggelopoulos, the Greek Ambassador in Canberra Alexios Christopoulos and the High Commissioner of Cyprus Ioannis Iakovou.

The Australian Minister told the delegation that he plans to visit Cyprus in the first semester of 2012, while the Community members met with Athanasios Synodinos and congratulated him on his recent election as Senator for the Liberal Party.
