Greek Australian Alex Perry Calling Size-8 Model Fat

Alex Perry and Alissandra Moon

Fashion designer and ‘Australia’s Next top Model’ judge, Alex Perry, is coming under fire for his harsh commenting on the weight of the 18-year old model from Perth, Alissandra Moon. The famous Greek Australian judge enraged all women and dieticians around the world by calling the teenage girl “overstuffed luggage” on yesterday’s episode.

Ms Moon, who weighs 57kg and is 1.75m tall, told Daily Telegraph she was left dumbfounded by Perry’s negative remarks on her size 8, which became a problem for the popular show.

Perry commented on the fact that the contestant was not able to “fit in” one of the show’s designer dresses, saying that the show is not in search of a ‘face model’ but rather a ‘body model’. Moon answered that even though she understands that such comments are a reality of the fashion industry, they certainly send wrong and dangerous messages to young women watching the show, making them feel insecure about their body weight.

“I don’t want to lose weight. I feel fine with my size as it is.” Ms Moon said. “I have never thought of myself as fat. I am a health freak. I go to the gym and eat well.”

Today morning Mr. Perry answered his critics through Twitter and a local broadcast show by saying it was “incorrect reporting”. He refused to apologize for his comment and claimed that he did not say something wrong, since he was not commenting on her body shape or her face but on her modeling skills.  He continued that a model must work hard to ‘shine’ in any circumstances or environment a photo shoot is taking place at.

“Models must be thin enough to fit in the tiniest bit of garment. They gave her a size 10 and it still came in too small for her” Mr. Perry said. “”There was no way she would fit into a size eight garment at the time of that shoot.”

Mr Harden, General Manager of “Scene Model Management”, one of the biggest model agencies in Australia, said that “comments like that are not reflective of the fashion industry. Our models are never under size 8.”

Well-known Perth dietitian and spokesperson of the Dietitians Association of Australia, Mrs. Margaret Hayes, added that “comments of this kind can have a deep impact on a young person’s psyche and can easily cause eating disorders to young women.”
