Greek-Australian High School Student Awarded Champion of Public Speaking in New South Wales

Her dream is to become a dentist, but they all now urge her to become a lawyer or follow a profession that will allow her to speak out on issues and principles she believes.

Prairiewood High School student Fanulla Sapountzis became champion of public speaking in the state of New South Wales, Australia, which is considered to be a great educational distinction, according to the Diaspora newspaper “Neos Kosmos”.

There were six participants in the finals, who were asked to deliver a speech that they had previously prepared. They were then given three minutes to improvise on the topic ”Beating the Big Guys”.

The speeches of Fanoula were distinguished by her personal experiences and beliefs. The first speech was related to refugees and the need for better treatment. In her arguments, she included her own experiences, as she came to Australia from Greece at the age of seven and did not speak English. Part of the $ 850 received as a prize, Fanoula will allocate it to charities.

“Her speech was genuine, authentic and empowered by her own sense of being part of the history she was developing,” said one of the judges, Peter Kerr, Chief Editor of the newspaper Sydney Morning Herald, which was the official sponsor of the 34th competition.

The next public speaking contest, to be held on August 15, is  the Pan-Australian public speaking contest, in which the top two winners will represent Australia in the corresponding international competition to be held in Britain.
