Census: Just Say Greek!

Tuesday, August 9th, is the census day of the population of Australia. Authorities have already started to share the census form,  and by August 7th, all homes must have received the form.  The purpose of the census is to accurately record the Australian population, its basic characteristics, economic situation and living conditions. Thus, the completion of the census form is obligatory.

It is necessary for Greeks to declare their Greek roots.

Question 16 asks ”what language we speak at home other than English”. The response of those who speak Greek at home, regardless of speaking or writing the Greek language, must answer GREEK.  Pontian, for example, is Greek, but it is not the official language of the Greek nation.

Question 18 asks to declare the origin of our ancestry, that is our ethnicity. And here you have to write the word GREEK, not the special place of origin, ie Macedonian, Peloponnesian etc.

Children from mixed marriages, for example children from an Australian father and Greek mother, may declare both origins writing for example ”Greek, Australian”.
