Greek Orthodox Community in Sydney Decides on Church Issues

Members of the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales will hold an Extraordinary General Meeting on Sunday to decide on the proposal for cooperation with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.

In particular, the Community Council after years of negotiations with the Archdiocese will present a memorandum of understanding to all its members, which if approved would put an end to the ecclesiastical division of the expatriate community in Sydney and the Greek community would soon return back  to the Archdiocese and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The Community Council insists on voting to put an end to the Diaspora’s division. There are, however, several members who are fighting for the rejection of the proposal on the grounds that the Community’s institution is under persecution.
Meanwhile, a new Board of Directors will be elected on Sunday by Members of the Greek Community in Adelaide for the next two years. Thirty candidates will contest for the 17 seats of the Board. The outcome of the elections will determine whether the community will stay apart or take initiatives to reunite with the Archdiocese.
