Successful Melbourne Celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete

Rainy weather, on Sunday, prevented the Melbourne parade for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. However, the wreath-laying ceremony took place inside the Monument of the Unknown Soldier (Shrine of Remembrance) (photo).
On the Friday, a special event took place at the home of Mrs Helen Lianidou, (The Greek General Consul) as part of the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. The event was to commemorate the Australians who fought in Greece during the Second World War and the Greek Ministry of National Defence presented a special medal in their honor.

Also, at the event, medals were awarded to the son of William Gordon Leighton Parker as well as to the son and grandson of the soldiers William Arthrour Multon and George Charles Maxwell, respectively, who also fought on Crete.

Considerable excitement was caused when the Minister of Defense, Evangelos Venizelos along with the Greek Ambassador, Alexios Christopoulos presented a medal to Thomas Robert Morris, an Australian Veteran soldier, in recognition of the competitive presence and offering during the Second World War in Greece.
“This,” said the veteran Australian “is the most important moment of my life. It is something magical. I’m pinching myself to determine whether it is true. I have never felt  such joy and emotion in my life. ”
As part of the celebrations for this important anniversary, a large group of Australian politicians, members of the military, veterans  and many other Greek Australians who fought on Crete, will visit Greece to attend the major events to be held.  The Australian contingent, led by the Greek Australian Lt. Lucas Chaitas, who is arguing that the roots of his ancestors can be traced back to 1821, will also be involved in the commemorations.

Finally, the Melbourne celebrations were concluded with lunch in the Cretan Center  on Sunday afternoon and despite the rainy weather, the whole day’s events were successful.
