Greek politician Athanasios Synodinos is expected to come back strongly to the political arena – some doubt that he has ever stayed away – becoming the head of Liberals. Mr. Synodinos, who has been working for 10 years as personnel officer of Prime Minister John Hοward, is going to be unanimously designated as the President of the State Liberal party by the Executive Committee shortly. After the federal elections of last August, the name of the Greek politician was again in the foreground, but former head of Opposition and current State’s Leader Barry O’ Farrell reacted. He explained that he didn’t want upheavals among the party members a few months before state voting. Natasha Maclaren-Jones, who has been the president so far, was elected in the Senate, so now her replacement can be easier.
Sources coming from the party claim that Mr. Synodinos is ideal for the presidency, as he is both appreciated for his qualifications in politics by many people and considered to be the most appropriate to handle the strong trio of John Howard, Tony Abott and Barry O’ Farrell. Members of Liberals said: “We feel comfortable with Thanasis. We hope that he will be a fair and objective president. He was the number two of the country during Howard’s presidency. He is not going to lose time with insignificant problems in local organizations, unless there is something that could have wider consequences”.
Mr. Synodinos was born in 1957 in Newcastle by Greek parents. He studied Economics at the local university and in 1980 he was incorporated in the personnel of the Ministry of Finance (Treasury). He worked for some years as consultant of Mr. Howard and when he became Prime Minister, he was appointed chief of his office from 1997 until 2006.
