Double Award for Greek Presence by The Australia National Trust Heritage

The Australia National Trust Heritage recently honored the Greek presence in the fifth continent and its contribution to the development of the country.  The top award was given to the re-edition of a historical book which recorded the presence of Greeks in Australia, at the beginning of the previous century. The book “Life in Australia” was released in 1916 and it is the first book in Australia that was published in Greek. It was re-edited two years ago, both in Greek (original version) and in English. The initiative of the re-edition belongs to Angelo Notaras, James Prineas and George Poulos.

The National Trust Heritage didn’t award only this initiative, but it also honored four expatriates for the restoration of a historic cinema, the Saraton Theatre, which was built in 1926 by Antonis and Giannis Notaras from Kythera and restored by their children. This cinema is in the small town Grafton and its name comes from the surname of the founder written reversed. Today it is considered as a “piece of art” and it has won the Pan-Australian Prize for the Restoration of Old Buildings.
