Greek-Australian Politician John Hatzistergos Announces Resignation

John Hatzistergos

John Hatzistergos, widely regarded as the most substantial figure left standing for NSW Labor following Saturday’s election wipeout, is quitting.
Hatzistergos – the state’s outgoing attorney-general and the longest continuous-serving Minister in the Labor government – will vacate his upper house seat before Easter, despite having four years left to run.
“My job here is done,” Hatzistergos, told The Australian exclusively yesterday. “It was a very difficult four years, but I had to see it through.”
Hatzistergos’s announcement, coming on the morning of Labor’s first post-election caucus meeting, will take some of the gloss off the expected elevation of outgoing Transport Minister John Robertson to the party leadership.
Hatzistergos said Robertson had implored him to stay.
“I wish him well in what is a very difficult assignment,” Hatzistergos said. “But this allows the party to get another person in and allows me to refresh my life.”
