Poster for 70th celebration of “1941 Greek Expedition”

Every year the Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs publishes posters dedicated to important anniversaries. This year, the poster is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the “1941 Greek Expedition”, as they call the presence of the Australian military army in Greece during the Second World War. The poster presents a photograph of four Australian soldiers sitting on the stairs of Erehthion at the Acropolis with a view of Athens. The soldiers had reached Greece a few days before the invasion of the Nazis, and they managed to visit the sights and the monuments before they started  battles against the invaders.

Regarding the national anniversary on the 25th March, the Australian-Greek Council states that as Australian- Greeks, we honor the sacrifice of the Australians who came such a long way from their homes to fight in favor of the Greek Democracy. For the 70th anniversary of the Greek Expedition, the NNO published a memorial diary for the period of June 2011-December 2012.

The diary has various photographs and paintings with the ANZAK (the Australian soldiers) in Greek and Cypriot areas in 1941, with an image for every month. Among the sites portrayed in the diary, a viewer can see Vevi of Florina, Argos, Kalamata, Korinthos, Crete and Cyprus. Every image of the diary shows the presence of Australians in Greece and Cyprus during the 2nd World War.
