Six years jail for Greek fake ‘lord’

George Bavelos

A Melbourne conman who claimed to be a high flying investment banker will spend at least six years in jail.
Greek George Bavelos from Campbellfield, was found guilty of nine counts of fraud.
The Victorian County Court heard Bavelos convinced his fiance, Helen Biamis, and her mother, Triana Boubis, from Broadford, to invest $1.1 million with him from 2004 to 2006.
He promised to invest their money in European high interest accounts.
Today, Bavelos, 52, was sentenced to nine years and two months, with a non-parole period of six years.
In sentencing, the judge said the crimes were callous and Bavelos had spent his victims’ money with outrageous extravagance.
In one instance Bavelos used about $31,000 of their money to pay for the three of them to stay at the Ritz Hotel in London for a week.
