“Kafe-Rebetika” Performance at Sydney’s Opera House

The Greek Festival of Sydney will present at the Opera House the performance “Kafe-Rebetika”, which has already won applause. The performance describes a drama of the urban subculture in the 1930s, when rebetiko started developing, combining perfectly music, dance and performance.

The main characters are Stavrakas and Areti, played by Antonis Nikalakopoulos and Jenny Vuletic respectively. Other actors that are included in the play are: Lucy Najm, Katerina Kotsoni, Steve Mouzakis, Tom Papathanasiou and Peter Stefanou. The group “Rebetiki” has undertaken the music (Achilleas Yiangoulis, Tony Iliou, Takis Dimitriou and Argiris Argiropoulos).

Stephen Lloyd Helper is the director and co-writer. Tom Papathanasiou and “Rebetiki” have also contributed to the script-writing. Stage lighting is undertaken by a group of people, including Nigel Levingsan who was awarded with the “Tony Award”. The performance is in English and the music is in Greek, accompanied by English subtitles.
