The fate of the $1.8 billion levy is in the hands of key independent senator Nick Xenophon, who wants recovery funding tied to state and territory disaster insurance. The Labor Government of Julia Gillard managed to persuade the independent deputies and senators to vote the levy for the restoration of the damages, caused by floods and natural disasters. Parliament will debate the levy, part of the government’s $5.6 billion reconstruction package, when it returns this week. But the government needs the support of the Greek Nick Xenophon to get it through the Senate, which doesn’t sit until the following week.
