Retrial Begins for Serial Killer Peter Dupas

The retrial for serial killer Peter Dupas who is accused of murdering a woman 13 years ago, has begun in the Victorian Supreme Court.
Dupas aged 57, is alleged to have stabbed 25-year-old Mersina Halvagis more than 30 times as she tended her grandmother’s grave at the Fawkner Cemetery in 1997.
Three witnesses will testify that they saw a man matching Dupas’ description at Fawkner Cemetery on the day Mersina Halvagis was stabbed more than 33 times as she tended to her grandmother’s grave on November 1, 1997.
Dupas pleaded not guilty to her murder.
His defence said even though he has convictions for murdering two other women, it did not mean he also murdered Halvagis.
Dupas was convicted in 2000 for the murder of Nicole Patterson and in 2004 for the murder of Margaret Maher.
The prosecution said Dupas told police he had never been to Fawkner Cemetery and did not know anyone buried there.  Howwever his grandfather’s grave was 128 metres from where Halvagis was murdered.
The Victorian Supreme Court trial continues on Thursday.
