Promises made by Australian politicians on the teaching of the Greek Language

As part of the activities to include the Greek language as one of the official languages which will be taught in Australia, the Hellenic Studies Council undertook a political initiative.
The council requested and achieved on June 7th 2010 two separate meetings with: The Minister of Education of South Australia, Mr. Jay Wetherill and shadow Minister of Education, Mr. David Pisoni. The meetings took place in an overwhelming atmosphere whereby constructive views were exchanged on the issue that has motivated the majority of Greeks in Australia, the Press and many politicians and a written pleading has been submitted for our state.
During the discussions, both sides underlined the importance of the Greek language and culture, their importance for Australia and particularly the effectiveness of the language on programs ranging from kindergarten to university. Particular reference was made to the fact that the teaching of the Greek language is morally and financially supported by the Hellenism of Australia and the Greek Government. Both politicians committed to take on a series of initiatives in every direction so that the Greek language will be included in the official languages of the National Curriculum of Australia.

In the two meetings, apart from the politicians, the participants were: Giorgos Angelopoulos, SAE Australia and New Zealand coordinator and representatives of the Council, Theophanis Maras, President of the Federation of Greek Orthodox Communities of Australia, Vassilis Elovaris, the President of the Orthodox Community of South Australia, Christos Ioannou, the President of the Cypriot Community of South Australia, Michalis Tsianikas, the Head of the Department of Modern Greek Studies in Flinders and Neoklis Alexandridis, President of the AGUA Student Association.
