Last farewell to Chris Mourikis

Chris Mourikis, the Greek-Australian journalist, co-owner of the Neos Kosmos community newspaper and president of the Greek community of Melbourne, died at age 77 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The renowned member of the Greek Diaspora was born in Cephallonia and immigrated to Australia in 1954. Initially, he settled in Sidney, whereby he worked as a quayside worker. His job at the time proved to be fatal for his life. The asbestos he loaded on the ships was “deposited” in his lungs, and slowly, but deviously, killed him, as it had earlier resulted in his brother’s death and many other quayside workers, and more.
Christos Mourikis was the co-owner of “Neos Kosmos” and one of the most dynamic journalists of the Greek Diaspora of Australia. He had his own views and did not hesitate to speak up for them with great courage and dynamism.
He also served as the President of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria.
