Clayton: A cross no longer to bear at Centre Rd

Traders Anastasia Valmas, Arthur Minas, Toula and Harry Laspas welcome the new crossing.
VICROADS has met the Clayton community’s call and delivered a new pedestrian crossing in Centre Rd in time for the Easter long weekend.
Metropolitan southeast regional director Duncan Elliot confirmed last week construction of the highly anticipated crossing, which has been watched closely by traders and residents for the past month, was expected to be completed by March 31.
The news is tipped to bring relief and worry-free walking to the thousands of parishioners who will converge on the Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church for Easter celebrations this weekend, with a now direct and safe way to cross the notorious road closer to the church and shops.
The fight for a crossing at the intersection of Knight St and Centre Rd, at the Clayton South shopping strip, stepped up in 2008 after Clayton grandmother Anna Tsavasilis was killed while crossing the road.
Her family, local traders, residents and politicians and the Leader have since led a passionate campaign to have a crossing installed. Harry’s Factory Outlet owner Toula Laspas said the crossing would be operating “just in time”.
“It’s just fantastic for it to be done in the time frame for Easter,” she said.
“It will make people’s lives so much easier and everyone has been anxious to see it completed.”
Mrs Laspas thanked the community for keeping pressure on the State Government for a crossing, and VicRoads for following through with the promise.
“We’ve been hanging in there so this is just great,” she said.
