Zammits return home

THE family of Doujon Zammit (foto) have returned home from Greece after the court verdict in which nightclub bouncer Marios Antonopoulos was jailed for 22 1/2 years for the death of the former Cabramatta Leagues Club barman.
Antonopoulos was originally charged with murder and faced a life sentence for fatally beating Mr Zammit with a fold-out baton while the 20-year-old was holidaying on the island of Mykonos in 2008. But his charges were downgraded in a last-minute decision by the court before he was found guilty. Instead he was jailed for causing fatal bodily injury.
The two other men from the Tropicana nightclub who were originally found guilty of being involved in the attack escaped being put behind bars after they were granted bail.
George Chatzioannou and Dimitris Varonas were charged for being accessories to attempted murder and given sentences of less than 10 years.
Despite their acceptance of the court’s decision, Oliver and Rosemarie Zammit fear the two men involved in the case could flee Greece while on bail and never have to face their punishment.
“We believe in justice, we believe in the law and we accept the sentences that were passed down,” Mr Zammit told reporters outside the courthouse on the island of Lesbos.
“(We’re) a bit disappointed two men are going to be walking the streets, two men who have proven to be dishonest.”
Mr Zammit believes Chatzioannou and Varonas have the financial means to flee the country.
The Zammits travelled to Greece with their sons, Laurent and Zeake .
Kostas Gribilas, the Greek-Australian man who received Mr Zammit’s heart in a transplant operation, was also in Lesbos to lend his support during the trial.
