Baghdatis Wins In Sydney

59296398Former Australian Open runner up Marcos Baghdatis has won the 4th ATP title of his career, in Sydney after beating the talented Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the final. The Cypriot broke Gasquet once in the 1st set and managed to clinch it 6-4, the 2nd set was even tighter but Baghdatis held firm and won it 7-6 to seal a superb 6-4 7-6 victory. Baghdatis reached the final of the Australian Open in 2006, where he lost the title match to the world number 1 Roger Federer, despite being a set and a break up. The Cypriot went on to reach the last 4 at Wimbledon that year but he lost out to the World Number 2 Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Since then injuries have perhaps halted Baghdatis from making more of an impact on the tour, but he will be hoping that he can build on his success in Sydney and go deep once again at this year’s Australian Open, at Melbourne Park which begins tomorrow.

Marcus’ Sensitiveness
For conquering the trophy, Baghdatis will be receiving a reward of $67.260 (AUS). In turn, to show his social face, he announced at the awarding ceremony, that he will be donating $5,000 of the total award towards the relief of the wounded from the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti
