Gambling addict Greek Australian Harris Kakavas lost over 2 million US dollars in 4 hours playing bakara at the Atlantis Paradise Island Casino on the Bahamas. Although the casino in question was aware that Kakavas owed Las Vegas casinos over 5 million dollars, they however, loaned him one million dollars (which he then played and lost) .
They loaned him the money after a basic internet search they conducted on him where they found out that Kakavas had sold his house in Australia against a record 18 million dollars.
Atlantis Paradise Island Casino has sued Kakavas for 1,030,000 dollars. His lawyers claim that the casino took advantage of the client s gambling obsession and that the latter is not obliged to return the money that was loaned to him, as he played and lost it within the same casino.
The trial is of special interest, as the (parallel) trial of a legal suit against Crown casino by expat Kakavas is expected soon to conclude in Melbourne. Kakavas is claiming 35 million dollars from Crown casino. Specifically, 20 million dollars lost and 15 million dollars compensation.
Professor of Psychology, Alexander Blazounski, testified in court that Kakavas was betting up to 300,000 dollars at once on bakara ´to satisfy his dependency passion. He is a pathologically addicted gambler`, he said. Kakavas´s fundamental argument is that although the casino knew he was an addicted gambler, who had been banned from almost every casino in Australia, it used illegitimate methods in order to lure him into start playing at Melbourne´s Crown.
Kakavas lost 2,4 million dollars in 43 minutes, a total loss of 20 million dollars while gambling over 1,5 billion dollars.
