A decision by the Federation of Greek Orthodox Communities of Australia to recommend the inclusion of its churches in the Holy Synod of the Authentic Orthodox Christians of Greece has provoked strong reactions within the federation.
Officially, no one has disagreed, but unofficially, many members of the federation – especially from Sydney – have expressed their opposition. An official from the Sydney Greek-Australian community said it had not been publicized, in order not create problems in the federation. To date, the so-called autocephalous Orthodox Church of America and Australia has not been recognised by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and has been described as “schismatic” by the Archdiocese of Australia.
